That’s a rhetorical question. lol. History is filled with the consequences of eliminating outdoor cats.
Lately Ive been hearing more people spreading their loathing of stray and feral cats. Calling for everything from shoving them all into overcrowded shelters all the way to violent acts to eliminate them.
And with the city looking at killing deer and whatever they are planning for lost and stray dogs I have thoughts and concerns.
Aside from how insane it is to hate an animal like some people hate cats…🙄I don’t want to even think about these people. It’s weird to think that way about an animal. It’s just weird. Animals are animals, they are all perfect just as they are.
It is proven without a doubt that cats aren’t causing bird extinctions. Or any loss of wildlife. No neighborhood animal here is. Period. It’s not debatable or a matter of opinion. Its people. People are killing birds. People are killing birds and using cats as scapegoats instead of being willing to change. Cats are bad at catching birds. They are mousers by nature.
People using lawn treatments and over landscaping all of which kills bird’s food. No insects, no caterpillars for their babies. If they find food it’s often poisoned by people. Cats aren’t poisoning anything.
People destroy habitats. Unnecessary building, data centers, even cutting down that tree you don’t want there. No brush piles, no leaf piles, no places to nest or winter. That’s people doing all of that. Not cats.
Bait traps. Poisoning small rodents moves throughout the entire ecosystem. Yes, it reaches birds. cats aren’t using bait traps.
Scapegoating cats for the actions of people is irresponsible. Stop the destructive habits of people. And birds will flourish again.
What is going to happen if cat hating people convince CH city hall to take out the cats?
Besides being horrific, traumatic, and cruel. It would be an extremely difficult, if not futile, task. The vacuum effect is real.
If for some reason they were to succeed at eliminating outdoor cats, the city’s already healthy rodent population will BOOM!
Maybe coyotes will expand their territories into all the neighborhoods in the absence of cats. They are the next step up rodent hunters after cats and raptors and when one predator leaves another moves in. The coyotes definitely bring high risk of rabies and all sorts of stuff. I’m not opposed to coyotes. They are useful and part of the beautiful animal kingdom.❤️ they also have a right to exist. It’s better to have the cats for rodent control in most neighborhoods though. They rarely get, or spread, things like rabies. And coyotes can have the space they need in the parks.
CH isn’t going to invest in rabies vaccines for any animal. They’ll just kill off coyotes.
And we will still have mice and rats. More and more of them.
I’m not going to go through the list of repercussions for all the animal killing the city could approve. Any of it is ludicrous. None of it solves any problem.
We need outdoor cats. We need all of our animal crews!!
They could support the health and well being of community cats. Easy access tnr, vaccinations, and healthcare. These would control populations and stabilize colonies. Protective laws for community cat caregivers who give their time and money selflessly. Enforcement of laws that protect the animals and caregivers.
In return we get to live with adorable and reliable rodent control from sweet little felines.
We can have all of our night crews cleaning up the more undesirable insects and scraps while we sleep. We just need to spread the word about how lucky we are to have these animals looking out for our city.
And those overcrowded shelters? They are essential for emergency situations. But with tnr and proper care of community cats, most cats don’t need to be in shelters. They can live long, healthy lives with help from people and neighborhoods. Building a trusting relationship with them will lead many to find indoor homes! It’s a win all the way around.
That shelter room can be for caring for lost and stray dogs. Dogs can’t thrive outdoors with care like cats can. They are perpetual toddlers. Give the shelters more room for properly housing dogs in need.
Maybe let go of this ridiculous overdone landscaping and accept the services of our wonderful animal friends. Seriously, the animals are much more pleasant than the constant noise of the landscaping which IS killing the birds.
